Bam Bam: Not looking any worse for the wear after smacking his face at A2, Justin Barcia was back in action in Oakland (and promptly got taken out in a second turn pile-up).
Practice crashes:
Lots of riders went down in practice in Oakland including James
Stewart, Akira Narita, Travis Baker, Christian Craig, Zach Osborne, Kyle
Chisholm and Trey Canard. All of them rode away—except Narita, who was
looked at by the medical crew.
Last week's injuries: Ryan
Sipes and Michael Leib both broke bones in last week’s first turn
crash. Sipes hopes to be back by San Diego in three weeks, but Leib will
be out until the 250 West resumes after the 250 East starts.
Kevin Windham on retiring: “The love of the crowd was enough to keep me going forever, but my mind wasn’t into it. The writing was on the wall.”
450 timed qualifiers:
James Stewart set fast time with 55.14. Ryan Dungey was second at
55.33, Ryan Villopoto third at 55.62, Trey Canard fourth (55.71) and
Chad Reed fifth (55.75). Jake Weimer has the flu and was back in 11th
(56.86), just behind 10th place Justin Barcia (56.56). Weimer's flu got worse
after practice and decided to sit the race out.
450 Non-qualifiers:
Kevin Rookstool just missed the cut in 41st (but got kicked up to the
night show when Jake Weimer pulled out). Also on the the sidelines were
Teddy Parks, Chris Howell, Deven Raper and Guillaume Darriet. There were
only 50 riders trying to make the show.
Josh Hansen: No
show. Josh is sick. He was sick with the flu last week and failed to
make the night show. But, his team was working for another rider this
week...
Andrew Short: Andrew Short was pitting out of Mike
Kranyak’s old San Manuel Indian Casino truck (that was being used by
Josh Hansen before). Short says that he got bikes from a friend in Texas after
the McBrooks team folded. They were plain-wrap CRF450’s with no sponsor
logos.
250 timed qualifiers: No surprise that Ken Roczen
set the fastest time in 250 West practice (56.16 seconds), but Jason
Anderson and Zach Osborne were surprises as they pushed Eli Tomac back
to fourth overall. The remainder of the top ten was Davalos (fifth),
Rattray, Cunningham, Seely, Malcolm Stewart (ninth) and Jake Canada.
250 Non-qualifiers: Riders
who didn’t get to the night show included Broc Shoemaker, Matas Inda,
Cody Young and David Pulley. 58 riders tried for the 40 spots in the 250
night show.
450 Main: Ryan Villopoto raced to his second-consecutive Supercross win at the Oakland County Coliseum before a crowd of 46,896. Villopoto got the holeshot Award with Justin Brayton and Davi Millsaps in second and thirdy. A huge crash in turn two collected Chad Reed, James Stewart and Justin Barcia. Reed continued, but Stewart and Barcia retired. Villopoto developed an unchallenged lead quickly and Millsaps moved to second and held it to the end. Ryan Dungey finished third.
Ryan said: “The points race is what we are going after, and winning the holeshot gives you a great advantage. We made some changes to the bike today that I think really helped us out there tonight, so hats off to my team. It is a long season, and we are going to keep plugging away.”
250 Main: The news wasn’t about Ken Roczen’s win, because after three second place finishes it was obvious he would hit the top step eventually. And his chance came when Eli Tomac got a bad start and then crashed on the first lap. Eli got up in 18th and crashed a second time. His night was over, while Cole Seely tried to spoil Ken Roczen’s party. Roczen finally passed Seely on lap 11 of the 15 lap race. Jason Anderson finished third. Roczen has an 11-point lead in season point standings over Seely. Tomac is 15 points back.
Kenny said: “I am so happy with this win tonight. There was a lot of bar banging on that opening lap, but I charged hard and got out front. I am excited to bring this momentum back to Angel Stadium next weekend.”
