Last year KTM made 400 special versions of Ryan Dungey's bike because to be legal for AMA racing it had to be a production bike. Everyone thought that it was a one-off deal. Guess what? KTM has made enough changes to Ryan's bike for the 2013 Supercross season, that they have a new Factory Edition in the wings.
In a surprise move, KTM has announced the release of the second-generation KTM 450SXF Factory Edition...best known as the "Ryan Dungey Replica." Last year, after signing Ryan Dungey and promising him a brand-new, fuel-injected, high-tech machine for the 2012 Supercross and Nationals, KTM’s engineers went into overdrive to produce 400 Factory Editions to meet the AMA Supercross homologation rules. It was assumed that the 2012-1/2 KTM 450SXF-FE would be a one-off production run never to be repeated.
The new 2013-1/2 engine does not obsolete the existing 2013 KTM 450SXF's. It still uses the same single overhead cam design that pumped out more horsepower than any production 450 in history.
Guess again! For the 2013 Supercross season, KTM has some new engine parts ready for Ryan Dungey to race with, but these parts do not meet the current AMA production rules. KTM’s solution? A brand-new bike for Ryan. The new model has been developed through collaboration with the Red Bull KTM Team and the U.S.-based Research & Development Department. Each 2013-1/2 Factory Edition will come with a numbered limited edition sticker on the frame’s backbone that lists a number for the unit (the bike will be numbered 1 through 550). There will even be a small run of 150 European 450SXF Factory Editions (Europe didn’t get the 2012-1/2 FE, but a surprising number of them were bought in the USA by enterprising racers and shipped to Europe. So, this year KTM will offer a limited run for Europe).
KTM North America President Jon-Erik Burleson, who was just named the "AMA Motorcyclist of the Year" on Thursday, said, "Our company threw out the whole model year concept so that we could focus on building new product when the market demands it. We decided to built this bike because we wanted to be ready for the 2013 Superceoss season."
What is different on the new engine? It weigh a half pound less, thanks to new center cases and clutch-side case. The new cases allowed KTM to eliminate the kick start boss that was left-over from the enduro model of the engine. Dungey is a believer in electric start.
While the 2013-1/2 Factory Edition remains based around the latest generation, 450cc, fuel-injected, single-cam, four-stroke engine, the engine’s cases and clutch cover have been redesigned to minimize weight by removing the kick starter boss. This saves 1/2 pound. Under the AMA production rule the castings must be stock production parts–thus to use these new slim-line cases, KTM has to make the new engine a production part...and 550 units will more than satisfy the rule.
The 2013 engine cases are in the background. You can see the kick starter boss that has been eliminated from the 2013-1/2 Factory Edition cases (foreground). The motocross verison never had a kickstarter, but it still had the boss.
15 NEW THINGS ON THE 2013-1/2 FACTORY EDITION
KTM will make 550 Factory Editions for the U.S. market and 150 for the Euro market. That means that there will be 700 Ryan Dungey Replicas available by early Spring.
The 450SXF-FE also features a host of value-added aftermarket and custom items that include the following:
The 2013-1/2 Factory Edition gets KTM's special orange anodized triple clamps.

A special Ryan Dungey-developed 280 psi Belleville washer will come stock in the Factory Edition. This clutch spring is available at your local KTM dealer for the current 450SXF. We would expect it to be stock on the 2014 KTM 450SXF.
(15) 280 psi Belleville washer clutch spring (repalces 250 psi spring on the current 450SXF).
This is Ryan Dungey's test engine for the 2013 Supercross season. Note the lack of the kick starter boss on the cases.
The 2013-1/2 KTM 450SXF-FE will make its racing debut at Anaheim 1 on January 5...and be in showroom in the early Spring. For more info go to www.ktm.com
