THE WEIRDEST AND WILDEST DIRT CORNER EVER BUILT: You Gotta See This Turn To Believe It. The World's First 1440-Degree Corner
THE WEIRDEST AND WILDEST CORNER EVERY BUILT: YOU GOTTA SEE THIS TURN TO BELIEVE IT; THE WORLD'S FIRST 1440-DEGREE CORNER
Four concentric rings around the Glen Helen bridge.
On Saturday afternoon, Dirt Bike Magazine editor Ron Lawson called MXA editor Jody Weisel and asked if he was going to fly his airplane on Sunday. Jody said that since he wasn't racing on Sunday that he probably would go flying for entertainment. Then, Jody asked, "Why?
"You have got to shoot a photo of this turn I built for the Glen Helen Six-Hour Endurance race," said Ron.
"Where on the course is the turn?" asked Jody.
"Don't worry," said Ron. "You'll see it."
And Jody did. This is the photo that Jody shot with one hand while flying with the other. The riders enter the corner by coming down Mt. Saint Helen and going under the bridge. From the bridge they turn right, turn right, turn right, turn right and turn right. The track actually makes four (count 'em) 360-degree circles before crosses over on the bridge. The bridge may look small, but it was craned in from the Long Beach Harbor two years ago and is 150-feet long, 15 feet high and ten feet wide.
MXA test riders John Minert and Dennis Stapleton reported that they got dizzy if they tried to rail all the way around the four circles of this carousel. This is the 15th year of the HYR Six-Hour endurance race at Glen Helen Raceway. Gary Jones and Ron Lawson put together a course that has never been seen at any Endurance event anywhere. New trails were designed and the course is more technical, with more mileage and more fun. The event started Sunday at 8:30am and ended at 2:30pm. Each team could have up to three riders and two bikes. There are 11 classes from Expert and Sportsman.
