With a $250,000 purse and the winner walking away with a $100,000 check (and a shot at $1 million), the October 15, 2011 Monster Energy Cup will be held in Las Vegas. It is billed by Feld Motor Sports as a three-moto hybrid race that will be part Supercross and part Motocross. To win the million a rider has to win all three motos.
How they plan to make a hybrid track that includes the elements of a real motocross track in Sam Boyd Stadium will be the million dollar question.
Todd Jendro, senior director of two wheel operations at Feld Motor Sports, said. “This newly created format incorporates three main events, where riders will engage in three races, battling for rights to win the inaugural Monster Energy Cup. The event will feature a one-class format, offering riders the option to choose the bike of their choice, including 250-450cc four strokes or 125cc and 250cc two strokes. The unique “all in” option presents riders with maximum flexibility, manufacturers with a variety of set-up options and the perfect showcase for Supercross fans.”
Feld says that the unique hybrid track will consist of Supercross and motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence.
You gotta hope they get someone else to build it because there is nothing “motocross-style” about their current Supercross track designs or designers.
“We wanted to create a spectacular stand alone event that we knew would excite the fans, riders, teams and media,” said Bruce Stjernstrom, Monster Energy’s Vice President of Sports Marketing. “With a million dollars up for the taking—and with the world’s best riders all expected to attend— the Monster Energy Cup will be a race no one will want to miss.”
There will also be a Super-Mini class and the 250 A class that invites the top 15 riders from each class in the AMA Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Championships.
