ASK THE MXPERTS:

Why Does MXA Always Bash The 2009 YZ450F? You Should Be Applauding Them For Being Quiet

Dear MXA,
MXA really needs to wake up! You bash the 2009 Yamaha YZ450F for being down on power when they should be applauding them for making it quiet.

We appreciate your fervor, but it is misplaced. The 2009 Yamaha YZ450F is not a quiet bike. It is not legal under the current FIM/AMA limit (and there are full-race systems that are as much a full decibel quieter). We have no qualms about praising a bike that is quiet and powerful (or even one that is quiet and not that powerful), but the Yamaha isn’t either one of those things. While the 2009 KTM 450SXF tests at 95.4 dB, the YZ450F is 96.7 decibels. It should be noted that the 2009 KTM is the most powerful bike in the 450 class (and the quietest at the same time). What good is giving up five horsepower if you don’t get anything significant in return?

We wait with hopeful hearts for a quieter, more powerful, 2010 YZ450F.
