ASK THE MXPERTS:

Can You Tell Me The Correct Jetting For My 2002 Honda CR250?

Dear MXA,
I just bought a used 2002 CR250 and the jetting is way off. The bike spits and sputters. My bike has a 400 main, 35 pilot and the needle is on the last notch. Please help.

Honda two-stroke jetting has been atrocious from day one. Even the last CR250 that they made was poorly jetted. This means you are the member of a big group of riders with the same problem. In 2002 we ran a leaner main, leaner pilot and different needle. Here is what we ran in our 2002 CR250 for SoCal’s sea level tracks (the stock jets are in parentheses):
    Mainjet: 380
    Pilot jet: 32.5
    Needle: 6BEH2-72 (6BE430-74 stock)
Air screw: 1 turn out (1.5 turns)
Clip: 1st from top (2nd stock)
Note: In our opinion, Honda’s jetting was very borderline in 2002. The needle change helped clean up the initial mess, but with the air screw turned in and the needle clip all the way at the top, all it would take is a change in ambient temperature to throw the jetting off. If your dealer tells you he can’t find the 6BEH2-72 needle tell him to look in the 2001 parts book--it is an optional needle for the 2001 CR250.
