ASK THE MXPERTS:

I Want To Buy A 2008, 2009 or 2010 250 Four-Stroke, Which One Is The Most Reliable?

Dear MXA,
Is there any 2010 250 four-stroke that you would recommend over another as far as durability? I don’t care about performance as much as reliability. My friend says that the Honda CRF250 is not as reliable as the YZ250F or KX250F? I'm willing to buy a used bike from 2008 or 2009 also. You are the only mag that will tell me the truth.

There are some design differences between the five 250 four-strokes, but in truth they all run at the same rpm with the same basic bore-and-stroke mounted on the same running gear. The most reliable bike isn’t all that different from the least reliable in terms of overall design. Contrary to popular opinion, MXA has had very little trouble with our CRF250 in the last few years (although the early versions had several issues). But, if we were choosing on reliability alone, we would have to pick the Yamaha YZ250F.

All that said, if it was our money, we’d get the 2008 Kawasaki KX250F, 2009 Honda CRF250 or a 2010 Kawasaki KX250...because we value performance first
