ASK THE MXPERTS: ARE 16-YEAR-OLD RIDERS BANNED FROM PRO MOTOCROSS? WHY DOES MXA KEEP SAYING THAT THE AGE LIMIT IS GOING UP? AREN'T 16-YEAR-OLDS ELIGIBLE?
The
new AMA age restrictions are important of top amateur riders like Eli
Tomac. Will fake birth certificates start popping up again in amateur
racing?
Dear MXA, I noticed in an MXA story a sentence that said that 16-year-old riders would not be given AMA Pro license in the future. This can't be true. I looked at my AMA rulebook and it says that a rider can apply for a license when he turns 16. Where did MXA get its info?
You are looking at an older AMA rule book. Get a 2009 AMA rule book and read Section 2; Sub-Section 2.3.
It says (and we quote):
"All license applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of application. In 2010, all license applicants must be at least 17 years of age at the time of application. In 2011, all license applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. Applicants who do not meet the minimum age requirement at the time of license application, but who met the minimum age requirements and had been issued a license in the previous year, will be grandfathered and issued a license."
2009 is the last year that 16-year-olds will be allowed to turn Pro.
