ASK THE MXPERTS: CAN MY FILTER CATCH ON FIRE?

Dear MXA,
Can I remove the wire mesh screen inside my KTM 450SXF air filter cage?

The manufacturers put the wire screen in the cage to stop backfire flames from catching the air filter on fire. They must have some reported cases of this happening, but in MXA's 35 years we have never caught an air filter on fire. On our KTM 450SXF we don'™t remove the screen, but we order the air filter cage from a KTM 250SX two-stroke. It is the same cage without the screen. We recommend using Twin Air's special Backfire air filter. It is fire resistant. On other brands, you can cut the screen out or order a Twin-Air GP kit that eliminates the cage.
