ASK THE MXPERTS: HOW BENT IS BENT?

How Bent Can A Rim Be Before It Needs to Be Replaced? Can I Race On A Dented Rim?

Dear MXA,
Both my rims are slightly bent. However, I don't notice anything while racing. Is there any real reason to try to straighten them? Should I ignore it?

In truth, we run rims on some of our test bikes with very large dents in them. As long on the rim is straight (and you can test this by holding a screwdriver against the outer edge of the rim while spinning the wheel) it isn’t a major issue. Be sure and check the rim for any cracks. If you see a crack, replace the rim immediately. Dented rims are only a problem if your can feel them when riding or they create an entrance for dirt to get into the bead of the tire.
