ASK THE MXPERTS: HOW CAN A PRIVATEER EARN AT THE WASHOUGAL NATIONAL?
Dear MXA, How much money can a privateer make at a National? How much would he make if he won, finished third, tenth, 20th or dead last?
It varies depending on what brand of bike he rides (and whether or not he is a real privateer or a factory supported privateer). All the money figures below are a combination of the AMA purse and the guaranteed, posted, bonus money. Let’s assume that you are talking about a real privateer. Here are the answers:
IF HE WON HOW MUCH WOULD HE MAKE? If the privateer was on a Kawasaki KX450F and won both motos, he would take home $53,050. If he won on a KX250F, Yamaha or a Honda he would make $28,050. Unfortunately, we could find no money posted for Suzuki or KTM riders.
IF HE FINISHED THIRD HOW MUCH WOULD HE MAKE? If the privateer went 3-3 on a Kawasaki KX450F, Yamaha YZ250F or Yamaha YZ450F he would take home $16,800. If he went 3-3 on a Honda he would make $3800.
IF HE FINISHED TENTH HOW MUCH WOULD HE MAKE? If the privateer went 10-10 for tenth overall on a Yamaha or Kawasaki (of either displacement) he would make $2540. If the privateer went 10-10 for tenth overall on a Honda he would make $1640.
IF HE FINISHED 20TH HOW MUCH WOULD HE MAKE? If the privateer went 20-20 for 20th overall on a Yamaha he would make $1160. If the privateer went 20-20 for 20th overall on a Kawasaki he would make $960. If the privateer went 20-20 for 20th overall on a Honda he would make $760.
IF HE FINISHED DEAD LAST HOW MUCH WOULD HE MAKE? If the privateer went 40-40 for 40th overall on a Kawasaki KX250F or KX450F he would make $565. If the privateer went 40-40 for 40th overall on a Yamaha, Honda, KTM or Suzuki he would make $440.
WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED HERE?
(1) On average an AMA National pays the exact same total purse as an AMA Supercross. The posted National purse is $66,140 per event. This money comes directly from the event promoter each weekend. Read that again: Supercross and the AMA Nationals have the exact same total purse! That purse money is also supplemented by guaranteed, posted, bonus money (which means that money is part of the AMA’s payout system).
(2) The major difference between the payout (per rider) at a Supercross and an AMA National is that the National purse is divided by 160 checks (every rider in every moto gets paid--even the last place guy, who went 40-40, would get $440 from the $66,140). (3) Even though you didn’t asked about second place it pays. KX450F rider: $27,150. YZ250F/YZ450F rider: $22,150. KX250F rider: $17,150. CRF250/450 rider: $6150.
(4) Full-factory riders do not sign-up for the AMA's guaranteed contingency plan, instead they makes $103,050 a week for winning (winning all 12 Nationals, like James Stewart did in 2008, would put at least $1,236,600 in purse-related money in the rider's pocket--plus the factory riders get $1,000,000 Championship bonus--which makes a totally successfully National campaign worth a minimum of $2,236,600).
(5) How much an individual rider makes from the AMA National purse depends on how much bonus money each factory puts into the pot.
(7) The entry fee for the Glen Helen National is $200. Every rider, even if he rides a bike that doesn’t pay AMA bonus money will get double his entry fee back even if he finishes last.
(7) You can nitpick the answer in a million ways (separating bonus money from purse money, privateer from factory-supported privateer, pickup truck versus semi), but these are the numbers.
