ASK THE MXPERTS: MOTOCROSS PREMIX RATIOS

I'm Afraid Of Seizing My Engine, Can I Run 12:1 Pre-Mix In My Bike Instead of 40:1?

Dear MXA,
Can you seize a Yamaha YZ125 from running 12:1 oil mix at piston break-in. Wouldn’t this make it too rich to seize?

No. It would make it too lean. Too much oil in the mixture is as bad as not enough oil. The excessive oil displaces the gasoline, which counter-intuitively leans the mixture (it’s lean it because there is virtually no gasoline in the fuel mixture). The bike seizes because it does not get the cooling effect of a fresh charge of gasoline with each stroke.
