ASK THE MXPERTS: Why Does My 2004 KX250F Overheat? And What Can I Do About It?

   ASK THE MXPERTS:
WHY DOES MY 2004 KAWASAKI KX250F OVERHEAT

Dear MXA,
I bought a used 2004 KX250F (it was all I could afford). My KX250F overheats all the time. If I stop and let the engine run, it pumps water out of the overflow tube. Is this suppose to happen?

No, it isn’t suppose to happen, but unfortunately the cooling systems on the 2004 KX250F and 2004 RM-Z250 were inadequate (they were the same bike with different colored plastic). Kawasaki made radiator improvements in the ensuing model years, but that doesn’t help you. We suggest that you go to your local Kawasaki dealer and order a 1.6 radiator cap and a bottle of Maxima Cool-Aide. The Kawasaki part number for the radiator cap is 49085-1073.
