ASK THE MXPERTS: Why Does My CRF450 Squeal?

   ASK THE MXPERTS:
CRF450 TECH: YOUR OIL IS TOO LOW

Dear MXA,
My 2007 CRF450 makes a squealing sound when I start it. The sound goes away once the bike is running. It runs fine, but always squeals when started. Should I be concerned?

Yes. The high-pitched squeal is coming from your kickstarter idler gear. The oil level in your engine is too low. Don’t trust the oil level check hole on the CRF cases. It is 200cc too low. The only real fix is to drain the tranny and pour in the correct amount of oil from the owner's manual.
