Max Nagl, who elected to race the KTM 450SXF instead of the 350SXF favor
by his teammate Antonio Cairoli won the first moto of the Portuguese
Grand Prix by 14 seconds over Team Suzuki’s Clement Desalle and 2008 450
World Champion David Philippaerts. Cairoli was fifth.
Other 450 notables in moto one included Josh Coppins —17th on the
Aprilia twin. Jimmy Albertson—30th (and only completing ten laps). Ken
DeDycker—failed to finish any laps.
In the second moto, Antonio Cairoli, working on a fifth in moto one,
opened up a quick and decisive lead, but Suzuki rider Clement Desalle
hung with the Italian (knowing full well that he would beat Cairoli in
the overall classification with a 2-2 over Cairoli’s 5-1). First moto
winner Max Nagl was stuck back in sixth place until about the tenth lap
before he began to move forward. Nagl needed to get to third place to
beat Desalle for the overall, but Ken De Dycker, who had DNF’ed moto one
and Xavier Boog were between Max and the needed spot.

As luck would have it, on lap 15 Desalle faltered and DeDycker, Boog and
Nagl passed him. Suddenly the math got more complicated. Cairoli’s 5-1
would give him 41 points, de Dycker’s DNF in moto one eliminated him as
anything but a spoiler. Xavier Boog was fourth in the first moto and his
4-3 would give him 38 points. Nagl’s sudden move into fourth meant that
he had 43 points and the overall win—then Clement Desalle passed Nagl
back on lap 18. with one lap to go, Cairoli and Nagl were tied at 1-5
and 5-1 (and the victory would go to the Italian over the German based
on the better second moto).
Then, the shocker happened, Desalle rocket from fourth to second in the
final lap. Based on a single lap, that was two seconds faster than
Cairoli’s last lap, Clement Desalle earned a 2-2 for 44 points and
overall victory at the Grand Prix of Portugal. Cairoli (5-1) was second
overall and Max Nagl (1-5) was third.
In the 450 World Championship points race, after four events, Antonio Cairoli leads Max Nagl by 18 points. Former 450 World Champion Davide Philippaerts is third (46 points back). Jimmy Albertson is 13th in points (after only earning four points in Portugal).

MUSQUIN HOLDS OF THE RECKLESS YOUTH OF EUROPE
In the first 250 moto, Marvin Musquin held off the teenager duo of Ken
Roczen (16-years-old) and Jeffrey Herlings (15-years-old). These three
had a race of their own as fourth place finisher, Shaun Simpson was one
minute behind. Simpson finished 15 seconds in front of American Zach
Osborne (who was fifth). The first five riders included French, German,
Dutch, British and American riders.

The second moto was another Musquin victory, but this time Jeffrey
Herlings took second, Zach Osborne third and Jeremy van Horebeek fourth.
Ken Roczen, who turned 16 last week, fell to sixth after colliding with a lapper.
Other notables: After a great first moto, Shaun Simpson was 21st in moto
two, Harri Kullas was 14th and Matiss Karo was 15th.
Marvin Musquin, in his final GP season before moving to America in 2011,
now leads the 250 World Championships by 13 points over Ken Roczen who
is three points in front of Jeffrey Herlings. Steven Frossard is fourth,
Arnaud Tonus fifth and Zach Osborne has moved into sixth in points.
