WHAT STANDS OUT?
Here’s a list of things that stand out with T.G.O: American Summer DVD.
(1) Filming.
When we reviewed previous versions of The Great Outdoors, we raved about the artistic filming by Troy Adamitis and his crew. Unfortunately, American Summer only scratched the surface in terms of creative angles. It was a far cry from the outstanding cinematography that we have come to expect. We missed the super-slow-motion, high-speed panning and in-your-face zoom shots.
(2) Length.
At 1 hour and 20 minutes, American Summer was long enough for the casual observer, but we were left wanting more. Expect a “Special Edition” of this video soon. Every year, T.G.O. takes a different approach when presenting the footage. This year, they split the 250 and 450 classes up into two segments. It was a good idea, but it was upsetting that the video only covered select motos of various races. Case in point, Washougal and Unadilla weren’t even shown in American Summer.
(3) Behind the scenes.
We liked that American Summer encompassed the various players and took the time to interview these people at their houses. This video is heavy with personality—which we like. Those with weak stomachs might want to skip the surgery footage of Trey Canard getting his wrist repaired after High Point.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK?
The video is difficult to follow and lacks the top-notch cinematography effort that we’ve come to expect from The Great Outdoors series. We wish American Summer had been longer, included more significant racing footage and covered every race in the 12-race AMA 250/450 series.
American Summer was too short and too confusing for us. After years of award winning TGO’s this is a three-star DVD.
