STARS OF THE MXDN — WIN OR LOSE THEY ARE ALL STARS
Tony Cairoli swept every moto he was in, but he couldn’t carry Team Italy on his back.
Ken Dycker’s final moto of the day saved the win for Belgium.
Team USA could have been saved by the riding of Eli Tomac, but a first moto “Chadapult” cost the team what would have been the winning score.
Poor Dennis Ullrich, drafted on the defending German team when Marcus Schiffer got hurt, he was the difference between winning and losing, but it wasn’t his fault that he DNF’ed both motos. He was taken out both times.
Ken Roczen put on a show for the hometown German fans by winning the 250 class. Tomac and Roczen picked up right where they left off during the AMA Nationals. Photos: Ray Archer

HUSQVARNA UNVEILS 300 TWO-STROKE AT MOTOCROSS DES NATIONS
Displayed at the MXDN was the new Husqvarna 300 two-stroke. Husky chose the MXDN to showcase the first look at their new bikes because there will be a 300c two-stroke class as a support class to the GPs in 2014. Photo: Adam Duckworth
You don’t need a CIA photo analyst to reveal that the new Husky borrows heavily from KTM. This is a KTM chromoly frame (painted white), 300 KTM engine (with Husqvarna side cases) and WP forks (with blue triple clamps). This special version bike has a carbon fiber airbox and subframe made by CRM in Italy and a long silencer by Akrapovic. Photo: Moto/Adam Duckworth
ROGER DECOSTER ON THE MXDN, TEAM USA, GETTING ALONG, RACING AGAINST KEN ROCZEN & HIS BELGIAN ROOTS
Roger was a five-time World Champion and represented Team Belgium at the MXDN many times.
“It’s a very special race. It’s probably my favorite race of the year. I really feel like we will be going over there with very good riders that really want to represent the nation.”
“It’s amazing that these guys can be all year racing against each other so hard and they hate each other and they want to beat each other so bad, and then you go to Europe and then they’re best buddies.”
Today, Roger is the KTM team manager and directs both Ryan Dungey, Ken Roczen and Team USA.
“I feel a little bit weird going to Germany. The Germans beat us last year and Ken was the main guy on that team. So now we’re going to his home country, actually very close to where he’s from, close to his hometown.”
“The first year in Lommel, the first time that Team USA won in 1981, I had Belgian guys pushing me and wanting to fight and all that. I actually had to punch a guy to leave me alone. It was kind of weird. Over the years, I have been in the USA for so long now, that I like to see Belgium do well, but I want my team, the American team, to win.”

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: SKF FORK SEALS/DUST WIPERS
With one of every 2013 motocross bike made in our test fleet, the MXA test crew gets tired of blown forks seals. Which is why we replace the stock seals with SKF seals (they come stock on KTM’s and we rarely blow a KTM fork seal). SKF seal kits consist of a new oil seal and a new dust wiper. SKF’s self-lubricating rubber compound not only enables them to keep the oil in, but to reduce static friction (stiction) by a significant amount. Plus, we blow twice as many Kayaba PSF air fork seals as we do coil spring fork seals.
VERDICT: Nothing is more frustrating than looking down at your fork leg and seeing oil oozing towards your front brake rotor. A modern upside-down fork requires complete disassembly to replace a fork seal. In MXA’s opinion, modern fork seals are lightyears better than seals from a few years ago and SKF is better than any other modern seal. It is highly likely that a 2013-era fork seal would never leak or wear out if dirt wasn’t introduced into the equation. It’s not a matter of keeping the oil in, as much as the dirt out – thus the dust wiper. $35.99 (one seal and wiper) – www.mx-tech.com or (877) 850-5114.
