WHAT’S IT DO? Ever since the original Carrera goggles, ventilation has become a major feature of modern goggle design. The old-school Carrera’s flip-up vents and open air architecture have inspired dozens of creative airflow features, from air flaps to wraparound venturi vents to Batman-style wings to electric fans. But ,no matter how unique a vent is, it must tolerate roost and not allow excessive airflow to irritate the rider’s eyes. Proper air flow prevents fogging, helps dry sweat and lets the rider’s face breathe a little.
As the first American company to offer motocross-specific gear, Thor has never relied on gimmicks to sell products. With the Ally goggle, Thor sought to create a top-of-the-line goggle with superior ventilation. The Ally’s ventilation is achieved through four ports at the corners of the goggle, which are covered by perforated plastic vents. The vents are removable and have their own little pieces of foam to filter dust.
The MXA wrecking crew went to work testing all the details of the Ally goggle to see if Thor got everything just right.
WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the Thor Ally goggle.
(1) Vents. The removable vents at the four corners of the goggle offer good airflow when installed and tons of airflow when removed. When is it a good idea to remove the perforated cover? When the track is loamy, low speed and tacky. When the track is dusty, fast or muddy, put the vents back in. The Ally also comes with an extra set of vents in a different color in case you want to accessorize (or in case you just lose the little things in the bottom of your gear bag). The Ally comes in black/white, red/navy, silver/red/white, translucent yellow, white/gold, blue/black, Warning and Asian.
(2) Frame. The frame was on the small side, which meant that it fit well in a wide variety of helmets (we tried it on Thor, Shoei, Arai, Fox, Troy Lee, Bell and AXO helmets). The frame offers enough flex, curvature and peripheral vision to be quite comfortable.
(3) Removable nose guard. Many modern helmets come with integral nose guards to cover the gap between the helmet’s mouth guard and the bridge of the rider’s nose. We like the idea of added protection, but virtually every MXA test rider removes the helmet's nose guard because it tends to touch against the goggles (this is especially true with Bell and Troy Lee helmets).
(4) Foam. The triple-layer foam is comfortable, durable and fits flush against the face. The foam absorbs a reasonable amount of sweat, helped in part by the open vents.
(5) Lenses. Thor’s lenses are anti-fog, anti-scratch, UV protected, and tear-off ready. When you buy the Ally, you also get a goggle bag and an extra clear lens. Because the lens is the first thing to wear out on a pair of goggles, these items significantly increase the value of the package.
(6) Strap. The strap is thick, durable, and stays in place thanks to three silicone strips.
(7) Tear-offs. While regular Ally tear-offs are competitively priced at $6.95 per ten pack, a 14 pack of laminated tear-offs costs $19.95. That means it costs $1.42 every time you get roosted.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? No major complaints.
The Ally is a quality goggle, and the vents really work, especially when you take them out.
