DOCTOR’S REPORT: RUI GONCALVES BREAKS SHOULDER BLADE IN ITALY
Rui Goncalves hasn’t had much to brag about in 2012 and now he is hurt. Rui is ninth in 450 GP points (17 points in front of tenth place rider Shaun Simpson).
According to Dr. Francesco Pacelli, a osteopathy and Postural Analysis specialist, “Rui has taken quite a big hit after crashing, as he was struck by another rider. He lost consciousness for a short time and initially he didn’t remember the crash or where he was. Thankfully it came back quite quickly, so it is not thought the head injury is serious. He had some tests at the hospital and they were happy with this. He does have a fracture of the right shoulder blade, which will be the main problem for him. He has a lot of bruising on the right side of the rib cage, but nothing broken there, so he’s going to be sore for a while. I think from the initial information it may be around three weeks for recovery, but it may be possible for him to ride in Germany. He will go to see a specialist and have more detailed scans at his home in Belgium, so we will go from there.”

HONDA INVENTS A METHOD FOR WELDING STEEL & ALUMINUM TOGETHER
Honda has developed a technology for welding steel and aluminum together. Using Friction Stir Welding (FSW) the technology generates a new and stable metallic bonding between steel and aluminum by moving a rotating tool on the top of the aluminum which is lapped over the steel with high pressure. As a result, the welding strength becomes equal to or beyond conventional Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding. This system also can be used for aluminum-to-aluminum welding.

AMA road racer Erik Bostrom built a modern replica of 1967-68 AMA Grand National Champion Gary Nixon’s Erv Kanemoto-tuned Kawasaki KR750 two-stroke triple.

Bostrum used a Kawasaki Z1000 as a starting point and had Lossa Engineering make a custom fuel tank, front fender, tailpiece and billet wheels. Also, Leo Vince made Bostrum an exhaust system with three mufflers to mimic the exhausts on the late Gary Nixon’s three-cylinder two-stroke.
WHO REALLY IS THIRD IN ALL-TIME 450 CLASS WINS? DUNGEY OR JOHNSON?
A lot of motocross fans took exception to Ryan Dungey moving into third overall in all-time 450 class wins with 24 wins–surprassing Rick Johnson’s 22. It’s not that they didn’t believe it or appreciate Dungey’s talent, but more like they didn’t understand it.
Here is quick explanation. The 450 class is the replacement for the old 250cc class. All of Johnson 22 wins were on 250 two-strokes and all of Dungey’s wins are on 450 four-strokes. If the two divisions are considered equal, then Ryan Dungey indeed has surpassed Ricky Johnson on the win list.
But, as pablum for the hardcore old timers, the current 450 class is really more of a replacement for the 500cc Nationals when you look at it on displacement. Thus, if Ricky Johnson was allowed to pair his 13 AMA 500cc National wins to his 22 AMA 250 National wins he would have a total of 35 AMA National victories. Which means that Dungey would have a way to go to catch up to Ricky.
Now, if you wonder how Dungey could win more races than RJ (who is a seven-time AMA National Champion), the answer can be found in the number of races in a season. From 1986 to 1993 the 125cc riders raced 12 events a year, just like today’s AMA Nationals, but the 250 class only raced 5, 6 or 7 races a season (at the other races they raced 500s). When the 500 class was dropped in 1994, the 250 riders returned to racing 12 events.
In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Ryan Dungey got to race 36 AMA 450 Nationals. During the 1980s, it would have taken a rider the complete 1986 to 1991 seasons (six years) to ride 36 AMA 250 Nationals. In other words, Dungey raced 36 Nationals in half the time it would have taken a AMA Pro from the 1980s. Interesting, but meaningless since the two riders raced under different systems, different levels of competition and different times.

JOSH COPPINS MAKES A RESPECTABLE RETURN TO THE GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT

Josh Coppins joined the Rinaldi-led Yamaha team for this past weekend’s Faenza, Italy, GP. He will also race the German GP on September 23. Coppins raced for the Rinaldi Yamaha team from 2007 to 2009 (winning seven GP’s). At 35-year-old is already familiar with the latest Yamaha YZ450F after racing one in Australian.Josh Coppins’ two-weekend return to the FIM Motocross World Championship tour ended with 9-13 moto scores and 12th overall. The New Zealander, who announced his retirement after winning the Australian 450 Championship a couple weeks ago, says he will do better at the final round and his final GP in Germany in two weeks. Then, he will stay in Europe for the MXDN on September 30–which he says will the final big-time race of his career.
Coppins was a Grand Prix winner in his first stint in Europe.
Coppins said, “After winning in Australia it was great to have the opportunity to properly close the book by coming back to one of the most professional teams I’ve worked with in Grand Prix racing. I just want to go out and show there is still gas in the tank and give a good account of myself and the team. It will be good preparation for the Nations in Belgium and overall a nice way to finish a long career.”

Dubbed “Composite Fusion Plus,” the Prana Carbon incorporates an inner foam liner of pyramid-like structure of different foam densities. These structures take the brunt of the initial impact and direct energy sideways within the foam instead of linearly down to your head. Essentially, the “Composite Fusion Plus” features a shock absorbing liner based on a series of compressible cones that work much like the crumple zones on a car. The cones are arranged to provide varying degrees of compression so that the more delicate areas of the riders skull are offered greater protection. By using two densities of foam and arranging them in a unique porcupine layout, the Kali Prana absorbs energy as the pointy parts crush laterally.
VERDICT: On MXA’s scale, any helmet that weighs less than three pounds is exceptionally light. The Kali Prana Carbon weighed in at a svelte 2.75 pounds (size Medium). MARTY SMITH TO RECEIVE EDISON DYE MOTOCROSS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD AT THE 2012 WORLD VET CHAMPIONSHIP

Marty Smith will receive the 16th Annual Edison Dye Motocross Lifetime Achievement Award and it is fitting that this prestigious award be presented as part of the largest annual Vet motocross event in the world, the World Veteran Motocross Championships on November 2-3. The venue for this 28th annual event is the world famous Glen Helen Raceway, and the event will host nearly one thousand riders from more than 20 nations throughout the world.
Each rider honored gets an engraved marble plaque set into the Glen Helen "Walk of Fame." This is Edison Dye's.
Marty was the first AMA 125 National Champion (1974-75) and also won the 1977 AMA 500 National Championship. He will have his granite plaque placed alongside those of Roger DeCoster, Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson, Edison Dye, Bruce Brown, Torsten Hallman, Brad Lackey, Tony DiStefano, Bob Hannah, Joel Robert and others on the famous Glen Helen Raceway “Walk of Fame.”

2013 HUSQVARNA TR650 TERRA: $6999 ...The TR650 Terra is the dual-purpose member of the all-new Husqvarna duo. The Terra rolls on spoke wheels (21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear) and features red coloring (distinguishing it from its Strada brother). The TR650 Terra will carry an MSRP of $6999 and will be available in American dealerships as early as late September 2012.
2013 HUSQVARNA TR650 STRADA: $7499 ...Not far behind the arrival of the Terra will be the TR650 Strada. AUSSIE SUPERCROSS TRACKS RELEASED: THE SERIES IS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
Australian Supercross Championship has released track maps of it upcoming winter series. A new promoter, current Australian Superbike promoter IEG, has taken over from the previous promoter–who lost money–and has taken some promising new moves–including holding two rounds in conjunction with the Phillip Island Moto GP race in October.
Another big change for the Australian Supercross Series is that they will drop their gimmicky race formats and adopt the traditional 20-lap main event at all four rounds. The 450 class will contest a series of preliminary heats to qualify for the final, which will consist of a 20-lap racem while the 250 class riders will race a 15-lap final. Australia will also include classes for “Under 19” rIders (12 laps), “Junior Lites” (8 laps) and “85cc/150cc” (7 laps).

The odd shape of the engine cradles of Honda CRFs,two-stroke KTMs, and Yamaha YZ125s and YZ250s means that they won’t sit level on a standard bike stand. This is a pain; it is much easier to wash a bike, check the spokes, lube the chain and change tires if the wheels are suspended in the air. The Worx wedge is a $19.95 bolt-on top that fits on Matrix’s M2. It has a uniquely angled profile that compensates for the frame cradles of offending machines.

The Splitstream fuel filter is a sock-like, 25-micron, nylon fuel filter that hangs from the filler hole of the fuel tank to strain out dirt and debris that could clog the injector or fuel pump of a fuel-injected bike. After the first generation of electronic fuel-injected bikes, many of the OEMs have seen the need for a better fuel-filter system. Some have utilized an extra screen, repositioned the system at a more accessible angle or created more space below the intake for dirt to accumulate, but none have solved the problem.
VERDICT: Your bike’s fuel filter system can withstand quite a bit of dirt, but it will eventually clog and start to starve the engine. Simply put, clogs equal bogs. $29.95—(503) 830-6433 or www.split-stream.com.

MIKE BROWN WINS THE TKO CROSS-COUNTRY RACE: WHEN BROWNIE STRUGGLES YOU KNOW IT'S HARD
USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: DRC GYRO WHEEL-TRUING STAND
The DRC Gyro wheel-truing stand is an affordable and foldable wheel-truing stand that can be used for lacing wheels, truing wheels, balancing wheels and running bearing checks. Because the Gyro stand can be folded flat, it doesn’t take up much space in the home workshop. The Gyro stand accepts rim widths of up to 5 inches, rim sizes as large as 23 inches and axle diameters of more than 15mm. There is an optional axle for bikes with bearings from 10mm to 15mm.
VERDICT: Compared to the old-school wheel-truing stands that most shops use (about $250), which are large cast towers, we preferred to use the Gyro stand. It was more precise and less obtrusive when not in use. USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: ACERBIS KTM X-SEAT
For all practical purposes, the X-Seat is a one-piece unit. Think of the X-Seat as a Milky Way candy bar: a thick outer skin filled with dense closed-cell foam. While not bulletproof, the X-Seat withstood the rigors of MXA’s knee brace-wearing test riders without any ill effects. Over time, the exoskeleton suffered some scratches, but no tears. In fact, we punched a hole in it to see what would happen. Nothing happened. The hole did not spread, tear or even show up. The X-Seat is 10 times stronger on the surface than a conventional seat.
VERDICT: Depending on your brand of pants and how tight you wear them, the X-Seat’s ripples could pull your pants down when you are sliding fore and aft into corners. Every MXA test rider latched his pants a little tighter when using the X-Seat. It is also on the firm side. KTM owners normally complain about how soft the stock seat gets, so if they switch to the X-Seat they'll never have that particular complaint. It is not soft. We had issues with X-Seats that used outboard mounting brackets, which doesn’t apply to the KTM. $199.95—www.acerbis.com or (800) 659-1440.
USED IT ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: BOYESEN SHOKOUT GRIP SYSTEM
The Boyesen Shokout grip provides a small amount of give for riders with wrist injuries or arm pump issues.
The Boyesen Shokout grip offers a small degree of give to the clutch side when hitting whoops, landing from big jumps or bouncing over berms. Unlike an immovable left grip, the Boyesen Shokout grip allows a small amount of flex to lessen the force of impacts. It is like having a throttle on both sides. There is no doubt that the Boyesen Shokout grip can lessen arm pump, decrease handlebar vibration at the rider’s hand and decrease microtrauma in the whoops. Those are good things.

USED IT ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: PRO CIRCUIT KTM 250SX EXHAUST PIPE
This pipes adds 7 horsepower to the 50-horsepower KTM 250SX. No, that doesn't mean that it now makes 57 horsepower, but that it makes 7 more horses in places where it was weak.
In stock trim, the KTM 250SX two-stroke makes the most horsepower of any 250cc two-stroke sold. It peaks out at 50 horsepower. If the KTM 250SX has a weak link, it is that the power doesn’t do much after its 8400 rpm peak. Bolting the Pro Circuit pipe onto the stock KTM 250SX adds a half horse at 8500 rpm, 5-1/4 horses at 9000 rpm and an amazing 7 horses more at 9500 rpm. That power makes an incredible bike even better by broadening out the two-stroke thrust.
