THE MXA TEST FLEET: 450 DURABILITY REPORT

The MXA wrecking crew races every weekend. We rotate test bikes and test riders in order to compress the limited test time and make our shorter test cycles mimic many months on the bike. We aren’t worried about typical issues like graphics, chains and sprockets?just the gist of what the five bikes are like to live with.

YAMAHA YZ450F: Our only issue on the bulletproof YZ450F has been the ECU mapping. We spent the first two months of our test sessions coming up with new maps to fix the leaness?and, in the end, we produced one map for the stock exhaust system and a second map for the YZ450F with an aftermarket exhaust.

HONDA CRF450: Our 2014 CRF450 had a major TPS failure and has been sitting while we wait for some parts to get the fuel injection to work. We had a few clutch issues and PSF air fork seal problems before the TPS frizzed.

KAWASAKI KX450F: Apart from the usual chain guide and chain buffer pad problems, our KX450F has lots of laps and races on it?and it still produces great power. We have had to replace the PSF forks seals and chain guide.

SUZUKI RM-Z450: In stock trim we couldn’t race the Showa SFF forks on a real motocross track (although they work on smooth tracks with big jumps)?they were brutally harsh. We had them revalved. This bike is heavy, the clutch is weak and it overheats without a high-pressure cap, but it handles like no other bike in tight turns.

KTM 450SXF:
We revalved the forks and came up with some gearing, exhaust and airboot solutions to make the power hit sooner and harder down low. KTM’s rim choice is questionable. Thanks to its inmold graphics, it still looks new. We always check the rear spokes and rear sprocket bolts before every race.

“Having a guy like Stefan on our team speaks volumes to the value of our Omni Directional Suspension (ODS) technology and the overall concern about safety in our sport,” said 6D’s Bob Weber. “We are proud to have Stefan and Liam on the 6D team.”

DEBBI TAMIETTI’S GLEN HELEN  PHOTO GALLERY FROM LAST WEEK

Jeff Fahy (31) and CT Falk (63) traded roost at Glen Helen last weekend. Falk is the father of three racing sons?including mini sensation Mitchell Falk.

Mike “Monty D” Monaghan (76) is a loyal two-stroke racer and he knows how to make a YZ250 work around the outside.

Lars Larsson (75) and Bill Seifert (37) are part of the new wave of the old breed. Both raced back in the day and are still racing today.

When asked what the hot line was in the hairpin, Broc Armbruster (215) said, “I like to turn at the big rock.” Larry Laye (195) and Dennis Stapleton (184) used a more conformist line.

Speedway racer Randy Skinner is no longer a Speedway racer who does motocross, but a motocrosser who does speedway.  Either way, Joe Sutter (111) isn’t impressed.

Four-time 250 National Champion Gary Jones (1) and Jody Weisel (65) go way, way back. As Jody likes to say, “between us we have four AMA National Championships.”

KYLE CHISHOLM TO RACE YAMAHA’S IN CANADA & GETS A FILL-IN RIDE FOR SUPERCROSS

Kyle Chisholm.

Kyle Chisholm wil race the 2014 CMRC Motocross Nationals as Bobby Kiniry’s MX1 teammate at Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Yamaha. Chisolm has raced the Canadian Nationals before (2005-2006), winning their 250 East crown in 2006. Chisholm has been injured most of the last several years and had no offers from top-flight U.S. teams. “I’m definitely excited to be returning to Canada and to be racing with one of the country’s top teams. I have a lot of good memories from the two years I raced there and I’m looking forward to making new ones. My goal is, of course, to win the championship. It’s not going to be an easy task going up against the likes of Metcalfe, my teammate Bobby, and the top Canadians, but I wouldn’t be going back if I didn’t think I could win.”

With the injury to Ben Lamay, Kyle has been selected to fill-in for Ben during the AMA Supercross series.
